Trek into the breathtaking heart of the Annapurna Sanctuary
An amphitheater of snow-capped giants, diverse terrain, and timeless mountain culture
This trek is an extraordinary journey into the heart of the Annapurna Massif and some of the most storied terrain in mountaineering history. The Annapurna Sanctuary is a vast, mountain-ringed amphitheater situated below the massive south face of Annapurna I, the 10th highest mountain in the world. Annapurna I was the site of the first successful 8,000-meter climb when a French team led by Maurice Herzog touched its summit in 1950, a feat chronicled by Herzog in his classic book, “Annapurna.”
The Annapurna Base Camp Trek leads deep into the most stunning terrain of the Annapurna Massif, far away from the busy jeep tracks of the Annapurna Circuit. With unrivaled scenery and rich cultural offerings, this trek is ideal for both new and experienced trekkers and will leave you with wonderful memories to last a lifetime.

DAY 1
Arrive Kathmandu, Nepal
Arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport, Nepal (KTM). A Mountain Gurus representative will transfer you to our hotel in the bustling tourist district of Thamel. Our adventure begins here, in Nepal’s vibrant capital city, surrounded by shops selling Nepali handicrafts, restaurants and ancient Hindu and Buddhist temples. In the late afternoon we gather for a trek orientation and welcome dinner.
Hotel in Kathmandu (1 night)
DAY 2-3
Pokhara, Ulleri, and Ghorepani
We transfer to Kathmandu’s domestic airport for our morning flight to Pokhara. From the plane, we enjoy incredible views of the lush, terraced farms of the Himalayan foothills and the mountain ranges high above them. We will overnight in Pokhara, or we may drive to the village of Ulleri, home to Nepal’s Gurung ethnicity.
The next day, we set out on foot for the first hiking leg of our journey into the heart of the Annapurna Massif. We walk through the verdant foothills of the Himalayas, ascending red dirt paths through rhododendron forests and villages until we reach Ghorepani, our destination for the night. Ghorepani means “Horse Water,“ named for the water troughs once used by passing traders.

DAY 4
Poon Hill and Tadapani
Today we rise early to climb Poon Hill, one of the best mountain viewpoints in all of Nepal. We watch the sunrise illuminate the magnificent Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, then descend back to Ghorepani for brunch. In the afternoon, we cross Deurali Pass and trek through tropical forest to Tadapani, which means “Far Water.”

DAY 5-7
Chhomrong to Machhapuchhre Base Camp
Today we descend through the rainforest and emerge onto farmland on the side of a deep valley. The trail descends into this valley and takes a bridge across the river, then ascends the far side until we crest a hill above the much larger Modi Khola Valley. Shortly, we arrive in Chhomrong where we’ll stay the night. The next day, we ascend gently through forests of rhododendron and bamboo while keeping an eye out for monkeys. We reach a fork in the trail and bear right to the tiny settlement of Bamboo, where we take a welcome break for lunch in one of the teahouses near the river. In the afternoon, we leave the river and climb again to our lodge in Dovan.
Finally, we enter the Annapurna Sanctuary! As we leave Dovan, we catch sight of spectacular waterfalls cascading from the massive glaciers high above us. Our trail steepens as we ascend through the tiny hamlet of Himalaya and pass Hinku Cave, Fish Tail Mountain towers high above us as we walk into Machhapuchhre Base Camp.

DAY 8
Annapurna Base Camp and Himalaya
Today, we immerse ourselves in the spectacular scenery that surrounds us. From camp, we sip our morning tea as the rising sun illuminates the massive south face of Annapurna I (8,091 meters). Ten peaks taller than 6,000 meters tower just above us, including Annapurna South, Annapurna III and Hiunchuli. After breakfast, we trek higher into the Sanctuary, where the deep silence is broken only by the roar of distant avalanches. In the late afternoon, we retrace our steps back into the lush bamboo forests and down to the Himalaya Guest House, or, closer, to Dovan.

DAY 9-12
Jhinu Danda, Pokhara, and Kathmandu
Leaving the towering peaks behind, we descend back down the Modi Khola Valley past Chhomrong, to Jhinu Danda, where we spend the night. In the morning, we cross one of the longest suspension bridges in Nepal and trek to a small roadside village, where we meet our jeep drivers for the return to Pokhara. We have an extra contingency day if needed, which we spend exploring Pokhara or fly back to Kathmandu.
Finally, we say farewell to our staff and depart to Kathmandu. The rest of the day is flexible depending on the desires of the group. Some may simply want to relax and shop in Thamel, while others may tour Kathmandu’s many world heritage sites.

Things you should know about this trip
What are the physical requirements needed for this trek?
For this trek, you must be able to hike for 6 to 8 hours per day with a small daypack. We may gain as much as 2,000 feet of elevation in a day. Strong hiking skills and excellent physical fitness are required.
Who will guide my trek?
Our Annapurna Basecamp treks are led either by a Nepalese trekking guide or by a professional American mountain guide, in either case with experience leading international mountaineering expeditions. They will be assisted by a staff of highly experienced Sherpa guides and porters.
What are the Nepal's trekking seasons?
Nepal’s trekking seasons are dictated by the annual monsoon, which brings heavy rain and snow from June to September. Trekking conditions are excellent from March through May, before the monsoon arrives, and in October and November, after it ends. The winter months are very cold in the high mountains.
How much will my pack weigh?
During the trek you will carry only the gear you’ll need for each day. Porters will carry all your extra clothing and overnight gear. At no point will you carry your own camping gear or any group expedition equipment. For your comfort, your daypack will not weigh more than 15 to 20 pounds.
