Talk to an ADVENTURE expert

At 19,341 feet, the ice-capped roof of Mount Kilimanjaro towers high above the African plains. It is an awe-inspiring sight. As the least technical of the famed Seven Summits, Kilimanjaro is an excellent objective for aspiring climbers chasing their first major summit and for trekkers and outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds. Mountain Gurus has an approximately 98% success rate on Kilimanjaro. We take great pride in our ability to offer safe and exciting climbs to the top of Africa’s tallest mountain.

Our 11-day expedition follows the Lemosho Route to Uhuru Peak, also known as Kibo’s Summit. This is widely considered the most scenic route on the mountain as it traverses from the Shira Plateau Western Breach and Lava Tower to the Barranco Wall under the mountain’s impressive southern glaciers. The Lemosho Route allows for an additional night of acclimatization while crossing the vast Shira Plateau before connecting with the Machame Route, making summit day more achievable.

Our guides are trained professionals and our mountain services are simply fantastic. We are members of the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project (KPAP) because we are committed to paying our porters fair and ethical wages and equipping them with proper gear. Our climbing itineraries may be extended with magnificent safaris to the world-renowned Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park, famous for their abundant wildlife and unforgettable landscapes.

Lemosho Climb • 8 Days • 7 Nights on the mountain

The Lemosho Climb is the premium route to the summit of Kilimanjaro. It sees less traffic than other routes and offers an incredibly beautiful and pristine wilderness journey including a crossing of the Shira Plateau World Heritage Site. This itinerary features a longer, slower ascent, giving our bodies more time to acclimatize. As such, we have an exceptionally high success rate on this route. Ninety-eight percent of our climbers reach the summit.

Ngorongoro Safari • 3 Days

Our Mount Kilimanjaro expeditions may be extended by three days to visit three different wildlife parks in the Ngorongoro Highlands in and around the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater, a 12-mile-wide basin home to a huge variety of wildlife. We visit Lake Manyara National Park, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Tarangire National Park. Learn more about our safaris

Serengeti Safari • 5 Days

Or extend your Kilimanjaro expedition by five days to visit the legendary Serengeti after your safari at Ngorongoro. On this itinerary, you’ll enjoy the most outstanding safaris in all of Africa, where countless wildebeest stampede through the ladnscape where mankind began. You’ll discover amazing wildlife and enjoy luxury lodges and tented camps in the national parks of northern Tanzania. Learn more about our safaris

Why trek Kilimanjaro with Mountain Gurus?

We are proud partner company of the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project. When you climb with us, you can be sure that your porters are well taken care of. We voluntarily participate with KPAP’s monitoring activities and allow KPAP to evaluate the treatment of our porters. Mountain Gurus believes in socially responsible guiding. Unlike most outfitters who employ local African staff with limited climbing and medical skills at low wages, Mountain Gurus provides training and a livable wage to all our Tanzanian staff.

Mountain Gurus has been leading trips to East Africa and Tanzania since 2001. We know Kilimanjaro and we know how to provide safe, successful and enjoyable treks. We offer some of the best values on the mountain. Our local Tanzanian guides are friendly, knowledgeable and have vast experience leading first-rate trips using the finest camps, nutritious food preparation and top-notch porter staff. Our itineraries provide ample time for acclimatization and yield very high success rates on the mountain.

Our climbs are “fully supported,” which means you carry only a light trekking pack with your essential day gear, while our friendly porters will carry all of your overnight gear. We pay close attention to hygienic food preparation and water purification and our customer safety is simply excellent. Unlike other companies, we only use high quality Mountain Hardwear 4-season mountaineering tents and dome style dining tents. We provide full back dining chairs and a private toilet tent for your comfort. Our guide staff is trained in altitude illness awareness and wilderness first aid. We carry emergency oxygen and O2 saturation meters on every climb. Our friendly, experienced office staff will ensure you arrive in Africa with the right gear and the proper training for every aspect of your journey.

Experience the Mountain Gurus difference. Our services are among the best on the mountain.

The Mount Kilimanjaro trek!

Whether you are a novice or a seasoned trekker, a journey to Mount Kilimanjaro is an awe-inspiring adventure. Trekking in Africa is different from any other Seven Summits experience because of the diversity of geography you will experience and the wild animals you will encounter as you climb to the Roof of Africa.

Mountain Gurus is ready to make your expedition the experience of a lifetime. When planning an ascent of Kilimanjaro, it is critical that you choose an outfitter who can get you to the summit and back safely. At Mountain Gurus, we take pride in handling all of your arrangements from professional guides, to hotels, to equipment and meals while trekking. You’ll be free to enjoy the experience of a lifetime while we handle the details.

Why climb Mount Kilimanjaro?

What inspires you to climb mountains? Do you want to commune with nature, conquer your fears, challenge yourself or simply explore your planet? Have you set out to scale the Seven Summits?

No matter why you climb, Kilimanjaro is an exceptional destination. Africa’s most famous summit kisses the sky at 19,340 feet and is the planet’s tallest freestanding mountain. While other peaks in the Seven Summits are part of larger mountain ranges, Kilimanjaro stands alone. It is a collection of three dormant stratovolcanoes: Mawenzi, Shira, and the tallest point, Kibo. The flanks of Kilimanjaro host exceptional ecological diversity, and unlike any other Seven Summits expedition, your Kilimanjaro climb can be paired with a safari among the beautiful wildlife of Ngorongoro Crater or the Serengeti.

What can I expect on my Kilimanjaro adventure?

Your adventure will take you from savannah to rainforest to high-altitude heath and heather moors set beneath the glaciers that hang from Kilimanjaro’s summit. On this fully supported trek, you’ll never have to carry more than a light daypack as you climb from the warm African lowlands into the chill of the alpine desert 16,000 feet above the surrounding landscape. On this summit climb, you’ll see a greater diversity of flora, fauna and geology than on any other Seven Summits expedition.

Climbing Kilimanjaro is a rich and diverse experience, and you can expect the finest services throughout your journey. Whether they’re adapting the itinerary to allow sufficient time for acclimatization or ensuring that your meals and drinks are healthful and hygienic, our professional guides and expedition staff will put your safety and enjoyment first and foremost. At Mountain Gurus, we take pride in our ability to provide safe and successful ascents to the Roof of Africa.

How challenging is a Mount Kilimanjaro climb?

The first known ascent of Kilimanjaro occurred in 1889. Since then, untold thousands have attempted to repeat it and many have succeeded. Kilimanjaro is one of the most accessible of the world’s great peaks. This is a formidable trek, but anyone with strong physical fitness, solid endurance and a positive attitude can reach the summit. It is an excellent and awe-inspiring objective for everyone from beginner climbers to the most seasoned trekkers.

Nonetheless, between one-third and one-half of all those who attempt Kilimanjaro fail to reach the summit. That is why it is critical to choose the right guide service. At Mountain Gurus we are proud of our 98 percent success rate on Kilimanjaro’s most beautiful routes.

What does my Mount Kilimanjaro adventure include?

Mountain Gurus proudly offers fully supported expeditions to the Roof of Africa. On your expeditions, you can expect professional guides; itineraries that allow ample time for acclimatization while allowing you to trek at your own pace; three nights in the luxury Mount Meru Hotel in Arusha; a spacious, comfortable dining tent and 4-season sleeping tents while on the mountain; full-backed dining chairs and private toilet tent; healthful fresh meals prepared by professional mountain cooks; porter service; scheduled airport transfers; emergency oxygen and O2 saturation meter and all other group expedition equipment.

Our trekking guides are fluent in English and versed in wilderness first aid with an emphasis on recognizing and treating altitude illness. Our friendly office staff will help you prepare for your adventure. After descending from the mountain, most climbers choose to enjoy a safari in the Ngorongoro Region or the awe-inspiring Serengeti on the plains of the Great Rift Valley.

At Mountain Gurus we plan our expeditions with our climbers’ needs in mind, but we also respect the customs and traditions of our host countries. We strive to minimize our environmental impact, ensuring that you gain many memories and leave only footprints.

“A great experience begins with a long series of good decisions. The Mountain Gurus Team know how to make great decisions. We’ve enjoyed successful trips up Shuksan and now Kilimanjaro, looking forward to the next adventure with the team.” ~ Eric P, 2018

“Memories to last a lifetime & photos that don’t convey even a fraction of the challenge, the beauty, the wonder and the awe of climbing to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro and viewing animals of Tanazania. This was an incredible adventure that Jennifer, Carrie and I dreamed up years ago and Dennis from Mountain Gurus helped make a reality. “Because in the end, you won’t remember the time you spent working in the office or mowing your lawn. Climb that goddamn mountain.” Jack Kerouac, The Dharma Bums ~ Greg Y 2016

“Mountain Gurus … wthank you for your assistance in planning our Kilimanjaro trip, we all had a fantastic time and are very grateful for the experience. The team supporting us were fabulous, the guides looked after us incredibly well and …we enjoyed getting to know them. As we climbed, we came to appreciate how important their advice was to our prospects of reaching the summit, yet they still made the journey to the top enjoyable and informative. Coming into the camp each day to a song from the porters was an unforgettable experience, and we are grateful for how comfortable they made the trip for us. Certainly from what we saw of the other tour groups, we always felt like we were in the hands of the best, and this helped to make the experience truly unforgettable.” ~ Rick K, 2014

This trip was beyond my wildest dreams! Africa is absolutely an incredible and unique place to be. Climbing Kilimanjaro was an awesome and challenging adventure. I would recommend this trip to anyone who would like to test their limits, be challenged and have a wonderful time doing so.” Kate D, 2011

Hey Dennis, we made it back to Arusha and all of us made it to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro!!! I cannot tell you what an amazing experience you and Julius our guide put together. We will be writing more once we get back to faster computers but so far this has been the most perfect trip and honeymoon so thank you!!!!” Rachel P, 2014

“This trip far exceeded my expectations in every regard. I had no idea that the food and services would be Five Star. If you are looking for a great customized adventure use Mountain Gurus. Simply the best!” ~ Carlos N, 2013

What an amazing trip. We have no experience with mountain trekking, but MG made the trip a breeze from start to finish. The office in the U.S. was easy to work with, literally spent hours talking us through the trip, and even spoke with our guide while we were on the mountain (yes Tanzanian cell phones worked on the mountain!). Once we got there, we never had to worry about transportation, which was a relief. The trek itself was unbelievable. Our guide was by far the most knowledgeable man on the mountain, who has been leading treks for 30 years. Overall, an unforgettable experience. It was exhausting, but worth every minute.” ~ Sara C, 2014

Who will guide my trek?

On occasion we offer specialty treks led by an experienced American mountain guide. These climbs typically cost more due to the expense of hiring a Western guide.

How much will my pack weigh?

During the trek you will carry only the gear you’ll use each day. Porters will carry all your extra clothing items and overnight gear. At no point will you carry camping gear or other group or overnight equipment. For your comfort, your daypack will not weigh more than 15 to 20 pounds.

What is Mountain Gurus' summit success rate?

Our Mount Kilimanjaro climbs sees very high success rates. Over many years, we have led 98% of our climbers to the summit safely. We customize this trek to provide a slightly longer, slower ascent, which allows climbers more time to acclimatize to the altitude, greatly increasing your chance of summiting.

Although the routes we take to the summit of Kilimanjaro are less steep and challenging than climbing routes on the other Seven Summits, our guides must still be alert for other hazards, and altitude is foremost among them. The symptoms of altitude illness can range from mild headaches to more serious issues such Acute Mountain Sickness and edema. These ailments must be recognized and treated promptly. Our guides pride themselves on their ability to recognize and treat altitude ailments before they become serious.

Our local trek leader has summited Kilimanjaro more than 100 times, and our guides and support staff can show you the best of Tanzanian wildlife and culture throughout your adventure. All of our guides speak English fluently and are trained in Wilderness First Aid. Mountain Gurus will see you safely to the summit and ensure your adventure is enjoyable, memorable and safe!
